BGSA 2001 COACH'S GUIDELINES

1. Will not abuse nor let players abuse umpires. Cheering during a game is to encourage teammates not to taunt or tease players from the other team. Under no circumstances will abusive language be tolerated by anyone.
2. Report any defective equipment to the Equipment Manager or your league Commissioner. Never use equipment that might cause injury to a player.
3. Routinely check to ensure you have sufficient ice packs and first aid equipment.
4. Remain in the field area with players until all are picked up or accounted for after a game. Team parent or assistant coach may assist in this. Never leave a player at a field alone.
5. Try to have practices before and at the beginning of the season.
6. Have your players report no later than 15 minutes prior to game time, unless you are notified otherwise of a reason that they will be arriving late.
7. Winning coach should call in scores to the League Commissioners, or designates, on game day or next day if a night game.
8. Coaches and assistant coaches are not allowed to umpire their own games except as a last resort. Junior League home team coach is responsible for providing the umpire. Senior League umpires will be provided by the League's Umpire-in-Chief.
9. Umpires must wear a mask when working behind the plate; otherwise, they must call the game from behind the pitcher.
10. Disagreement with an umpire's call will be handled as follows:
a. Judgement Call -- e.g. ball/strike, fair/foul, safe/out, etc. No disagreement is allowed. Umpire is correct.
b. Play requires an explanation or interpretation of a rule -- e.g. player keeps running after ball has rolled under the bench. When the play has stopped calmly ask the umpire for time out and get together along with the other coach in an area away from the players and spectators. Refer to the rule in question and why you believe the rule was violated. The other coach may now agree or disagree with your contention. The umpire will then have the final say and the game will resume. At this point the coach may elect to pursue the matter by stating an intent to file a protest. both the umpire and the other coach must be so informed before play continues. See Rule 2-29 on how to file a protest.
11. Care should always be used with parents. No coach should ever get into "discussions" with parents from the opposing team. If a parent from the other team insists on a discussion please walk away and ask the other coach to calm the situation. Each coach is responsible for keeping their respective parents under control. Even the most insignificant situations can easily escalate into full blown controversies if coaches get embroiled in disagreements with parents from opposing teams during a game.
12. Board members and coaches have a responsibility to monitor compliance of the BGSA Rules If any coach has reason to believe that a violation exists, especially if it relates to the fair treatment of players, it is their responsibility to report this to the board.
13. Coaches are required to:
a. Distribute and collect all uniforms.
b. Maintain all BGSA equipment in good repair.
c. Return all uniforms and equipment promptly at the end of the season.
d. Participate in field clean-up day and keep fields free of trash during season.
e. Pursue Registration forms and fees when necessary.
f. Assist the Team Parent in the collection of fees for pictures and banquet.
g. Attend coaches meetings.
h. Keep parents off the bench and field.
i. Allow only one coach and two assistants on the field during a game.
14. School teams have use of some fields and are allowed to finish any inning started before 5:30. Please be patient and stay off the field until the game or practice is over. If teams cannot take the field by 6:00pm, the coaches can elect to have the game rescheduled. If the game is started, it is an official game and must still end at 7:30.
15. Field dimensions for your reference are as follows:
a. 60 feet from back of home plate to the far edge of first and third base.
b. 60 feet from the foul line edge of first and third to the center of second base.
c. 84 feet 10 inches from the back of home plate to the center of second base.
d. Senior League -- 40 feet from the back of home plate to the front edge of the pitcher's plate.
e. Junior League -- 35 feet from the back of home plate to the front edge of the pitcher's plate.
16. Coaches are strongly encouraged to "openly thank the umpire(s) after the game."
17. Softball is fun and should be an enjoyable experience for all involved. However, failure to observe BGSA rules and guidelines may result in the disqualification of a coach, assistant coach, team parent or board member from further league participation.

HAVE A GREAT SEASON !
